President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. joined the nation in hailing Filipino gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo following his golden win, taking home two gold medals in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Yulo ruled both the Floor Exercise and Vault Finals in Bercy Arena over the weekend—making him the first Filipino to clinch multiple golds in the quadrennial sporting event.
The Filipino gymnastics sensation indeed brought everyone together and kept them glued to their screens to witness history being made right before their eyes, even the First Couple.
“No words can express how proud we are of you, Caloy. You have achieved GOLD for the Philippines not once, but twice!” President Marcos said in a social media post.
“Aming ipinagmamalaki ang tagumpay mong nagniningning! Saludo kami sa iyo,” he added.
First Lady Liza Marcos, likewise, was elated with Yulo’s victory, saying that the Philippines is proud of him.
“Watching you win that GOLD in REAL TIME for the second time was incredible!” she said.
Meanwhile, House Speaker Martin Romualdez praised Yulo’s performance for “bringing immense pride and joy to the nation and showcasing the unparalleled talent and dedication of Filipino athletes on the global stage.”
Romualdez also called Yulo a “once-in-a-century” athlete who “have not only brought glory to the Philippines but have also highlighted the potential of our athletes to excel in the international arena.”
“Let us all unite in celebrating this momentous occasion and continue to support our athletes as they bring honor and pride to our beloved Philippines,” he added.
The Philippines is currently assured of at least four Olympic medals following boxers Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas respective quarterfinal wins, guaranteeing the country bronze medals in boxing. – av
