The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) on Friday, Nov. 29, launched its special 2024 Christmas Stamp, highlighting nine iconic churches along the historic Pasig River.
Titled “Simbang Gabi sa Ilog Pasig”, the Christmas stamp features the Binondo Church, Quiapo Church, Manila Cathedral, Sta. Ana Church, San Felipe Neri Parish, San Pedro Macati Church, Nuestra Señora de Gracia Church or Guadalupe Church, Pasig Cathedral, and Antipolo Cathedral.
Measuring 234 millimeters (nine meters) in length, the world’s “longest usable stamp” was made by Gelo Andres of Renacimiento Manila. It features embellishments of four-color process with blue iridescent ink on the river and the suprametal-multilevel embossing on the churches.
“Each stamp beautifully reflects the timeless elegance of these sacred landmarks while honoring the deep faith and enduring hope that unite Filipino communities,” the PHLPost said in a press release.
The Filipino Catholic tradition of “Simbang Gabi” is a series of nine consecutive evening or dawn masses in preparation for the birth of Christ.
The Pasig River, which is being rehabilitated and restored as an esplanade, served as a major waterway for trade and commerce between Manila Bay and Laguna de Bay during the Spanish colonial era.
Coinciding with the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony at Manila City Hall, PHLPost Postmaster General Luis Carlos stressed that the stamp symbolizes the essence of Christmas: “love, joy, peace, and hope.”
“It is more than a celebration of heritage—but also an invitation to rekindle our shared values of unity and devotion during the most joyous season of the year,” Carlos said.
Priced at P200, the special stamp is available for purchase at the PHLPost Office in Manila.
