1 injured by ‘piccolo’ on 1st day of DOH monitoring

MANILA — The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday recorded the holiday season’s first injury from a firecracker – an 11-year-old boy from Pasig City who hurt his hand while lighting a piccolo.

According to Action Paputok Injury Reduction 2017 Report No. 1, there was one case of firecracker-related injury from 6 a.m. of Dec.21 to 6 a.m. of December 22.

“This is five cases lower than the same time period last year,” the report said.

The boy was given medical attention at the Amang Rodriguez Medical Center.

The report was gathered by DOH sentinel hospitals, which have been tasked to provide accurate data on firecracker-related injuries as part of efforts to prevent and control them.

With Executive Order No. 28 in place, the DOH expects to see the number of such injuries reduced to half.

The order strictly regulates and controls the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices and encourages the community display of fireworks. (PNA)
