100 ex-extremists surrender; PNP vows to continue fight vs. lawlessness

One hundred former extremists surrendered to authorities through a formal ceremony held at the Sulu Provincial Gymnasium, on Saturday, July 30.

A total of 22 firearms, both long and short, were also turned over during the event.

The event was attended by Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos, Philippine National Police Officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr., and Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan.

“This is a collaborative effort among law enforcers, government agencies and other stakeholders sharing a common goal to end violence in communities towards nation building,” Danao said.

“Proper coordination was done among government agencies and non-governmental organizations who pledged help for the rebel returnees,” Danao said.

Food packs and monetary aid were given to those who surrendered. They will also be monitored to track progress in their way of living.

Danao said that simultaneous efforts for the same cause have been happening around the country, especially in rebel-infested areas.

“More than just being law enforcers, the PNP stands to ultimately promote lasting peace. An active government that is willing to listen to his people is the key to unlocking the barrier so the citizens can appreciate the programs and services that they ought to receive.” – gb
