Over 112K candidates in west Visayas for the May 14 polls

ILOILO CITY — A total of 112, 659 candidates in Western Visayas have filed their certificates of candidacy (COCs) for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections this May 14.

Dennis Ausan, the Regional Director of the Commission on Elections 6 (Western Visayas), said in an interview on Saturday that the data covered the seven-day filing of COCs or from April 14-20.

The number could still go up as the filing was extended for a day.

Through Comelec resolution no. 10310, the filing of COC has been extended from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. of April 21.

Of the total number, 72, 591 are running for village posts while 40, 068 are running for the youth elections.

For the barangay positions, Iloilo has the highest number of candidates with a total of 32,174, followed by Negros Occidental with a total of 14, 589 candidates.

Meanwhile, for SK elections, Iloilo remains on top with 15, 834 candidates and again followed by Negros Occidental with 8,680 total candidates.

Ausan said there were late COC filers but they were few compared to the previous days of filing.

He reiterated that the filing remains peaceful although some areas in the region have encountered minor problems. He did not elaborate.

He added they are expecting many works to be done after the end of the filing of COCs such as administrative works like encoding of names of candidates and other necessary information.

Also, he said that all Comelec provincial supervisors will personally deliver all COCs and logbooks to their main office on or before the April 25 deadline. (Cindy Ferrer/PNA)
