250K families affected by monsoon rains: NDRRMC

MANILA — Heavy rains and floods caused by the southwest monsoon enhanced by tropical cyclones “Henry”, “Inday” and “Josie” has so far affected 250,536 families residing in 1,011 barangays located in Regions 1, 3, 4A (Calabarzon), 4B (Mimaropa), 6, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and the National Capital Region.

In its 6 a.m. Tuesday update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said this is equivalent to 1,132,666 persons.

Being sheltered and aided in 302 evacuation centers were 14, 551 familes or around 61,674 individuals while those being helped in the outside are 92,083 families or equivalent to 384,621 persons.

Meanwhile, damage was placed at PHP817,301,517,68 with PHP455,800,000 for infrastructure and PHP361,501,517.68 for agriculture. These were reported in Regions 1,2,3, 4A, 4B, 6 and CAR, the NDRRMC chief said.

Also confirmed were two dead in Bontoc, Mountain Province, one in Guihulgan, Negros Occidental, and one in Caloocan, two missing in Rizal and one injured also in Bontoc.

NDRRMC executive director Ricardo Jalad said a total of 74 road sections and six bridges were affected in Regions 1, 3, 4A, 6 and the CAR.

Around 423 areas have experienced flooding in Regions 1, 3, 4A, 4B, CAR and the NCR of which floodwaters in 127 localities have already subsided.

A total of 209 houses were reported damaged, 30 totally and 179 partially, in Regions 1, 3, 4B, 6, and CAR.

Also, PHP24,872,076.48 worth of relief assistance had been provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Health, and local government units to affected families in Regions 1, 3, 4A, 4B, 6, NCR and CAR. (Priam Nepomuceno/PNA)
