3 dead, 2 hurt in Ateneo shooting

A shooting incident occurred during the graduation ceremony of the Ateneo Law School Sunday, July 24, left three persons dead and two others hurt, the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said.

Among the casualties were Rosita Furigay, former mayor of Lamitan City in Basilan, one Ateneo campus security guard, and Furigay’s personal security guard, according to QCPD.

Philippine National Police (PNP) Public Information Officer chief Brig. Gen. Roderick Augustus Alba said investigation is ongoing and assured that appropriate charges will be filed against the suspect.

PNP Officer-in-Charge Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. likewise assured the public that “stiffer security measures are being implemented” in Quezon City and the rest of Metro Manila.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte also condemned the shooting and extended her condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims who lost their lives in the incident.

“This kind of incident has no place in our society and must be condemned to the highest level,” Belmonte said.
