3 workers rescued in Marawi arrive home

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Aug. 14 — Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar has expressed gratitude to government troops for their efforts that led to the safe rescue of the three Zamboangueño construction workers in Marawi City.

Rescued by the Navy Special Forces in Marawi City were siblings Romar, 39, and Roel Marjolino, 37 of Barangay Pasonanca and Jimmy Esperat, 43 of Canelar.

The three were among hundreds of people taken hostage when the Maute group attacked Marawi City on May 23.

Based on their accounts, they escaped a few days ago and were eventually rescued by Navy Special Forces in Lake Lanao.

They arrived at the Majini pier of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) aboard a Navy vessel midnight Saturday.

Rear Adm. Rene Medina, NFWM commander, on Sunday turned them over to Salazar and consequently to their families after they have undergone medical check-ups and other procedures.

Salazar also turned over to the rescued workers financial assistance as well as relief goods as part of the support from the local government.

The three were among the several Zamboangueños who opted to work in Marawi City since they were paid a higher salary rate.

But because of their sad experience, they vowed not to return to Marawi City even though they will be offered bigger salary. (TPGJR/PNA)
