5.2-M persons affected by ‘Ompong’

MANILA — An estimated 5.2 million individuals have been affected by the inclement weather caused by Typhoon Ompong, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Friday.

These people are living in the 125-km. radius from the projected track of the typhoon, NDRRMC spokesperson Edgar Posadas said in a briefing in Camp Aquinaldo in Quezon City.

“There was a shift between the most affected province. Yesterday (Thursday), it was Cagayan with a total of 1.2 million, next was Isabela (with) 1.19 million but today (Friday), Isabela now is the number one projected to be affected with 1.57 million and then the province of Cagayan with 1.2 million,” Posadas said.

Posadas also reported that 2,298 families, or roughly 9,107 persons, were preemptively evacuated from Regions 1 (Ilocos), 2 (Cagayan Valley), 3 (Central Luzon), and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

He also noted that some 2,112 evacuation centers have been activated.

Posadas added that affected municipalities are placed at 189 while about 55,700 houses with light walls and roofings have been damaged.

He said the government’s third wave responders are already pre-positioned in Clark Field, Pampanga and waiting for staging points in the north for possible deployment. (Priam Nepomuceno/PNA)
