56 OFWs from Kuwait arriving home Tuesday night

MANILA — Another batch or a total of 56 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from Kuwait are scheduled to arrive at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) at around 10:40 p.m. on Tuesday.

They are onboard Philippine Airlines (PAL) flight PR 669.

There are now more than 3,700 repatriated OFWs from Kuwait since February, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

The DFA and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) were tasked to work on the OFWs’ repatriation, due to reports of maltreatment and abuse in Kuwait.

Joanna Demafelis, a Filipino domestic helper there, was killed and was found inside a freezer. Just recently, Demafelis’ employers, the primary suspects, were sentenced to death by Kuwaiti authorities.

Meanwhile, representatives from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) will welcome the distressed OFWs at NAIA. OWWA will provide them with temporary shelter, and the government will shoulder the transportation expenses so the OFWs can go home to their provinces.

The Philippine government also provides financial assistance to each repatriated OFWs.

The OFWs from Kuwait are also the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority’s (TESDA) priority in its training and retraining programs. (Ma. Cristina Arayata/PNA)
