8 students rescued from capsized motorboat in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY — The Philippine Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) in Estancia, Iloilo rescued eight students whose motorboat capsized Wednesday afternoon due to strong winds and big waves.

Lt. Ramil Palabrica, Philippine Coast Guard-Iloilo commander, on Thursday identified the students as: Arriane Boromeo, 14; Justine Vegare, 15; Rodel Gonzales, 16; Charmaine Joy Hiasa, 16; Blessed Lyn Mianne, 16; Rozel de la Cruz, 17; Aira Barres, 17; and Izzume P. Villanueva,18.

Palabrica said the Coast Guard in Estancia received a call from Leo Logronio, a concerned citizen who saw the accident from the mainland. The call, received at around 4 p.m Wednesday, informed them that a boat has capsized in the vicinity of Bulobadiang Islet in the said town.

Palabrica said the students were found clinging on the upended motorized banca when reached by the PCG Deployable Response Team (DRT).

They were immediately brought to the Don Colmenares District Hospital in Balasan, Iloilo for medical treatment.

He said that five of those rescued were confined for further treatment while the three others were sent home. (PNA)
