Leyte’s oldest town welcomes Palace holiday declaration

CARIGARA, Leyte — The local government of the region’s oldest settlement has welcomed the pronouncement of MalacaƱang declaring Jan. 25 as a special non-working day to celebrate the town’s 448th founding anniversary.

Proclamation No. 652 declaring a local holiday in Carigara signed by Executive Salvador Medialdea, will allow residents to enjoy the celebration, said Mayor Eduardo Ong. MalacaƱang issued the declaration last January 15.

ā€œThis event is something to be proud of and we look forward for the meaningful celebration showcasing the strength and talents of town people. I am hopeful that the people will enjoy the significant celebration, as we remain united for our quest for lasting peace and continued prosperity,ā€ Ong said on Wednesday.

Carigara, originally called Kangara, is the first town established in Eastern Visayas by Spaniards in 1570s.

Several socio-cultural activities have been planned for the week-long celebration with nightly activities dubbed ā€œMagara (elegant) sa Carigara.ā€

The highlight is the search for Outstanding Kalgaran-on that recognizes employees, retirees, school preparation implementers, teachers, cooperatives, village health stations, village peace councils, seal of good local governance for villages, board examination achievers, students, top taxpayers, newly-opened business, local artists,

ā€œThe award is the recognition of their outstanding contribution to the advancement and prestige of our municipality,ā€ Ong added.

Aside from awards night on Wednesday, other activities include search for Magara Festival Queen 2019, ritual presentation of Magara Festival that focuses on history and the town’s main farm and fishery products.
