ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Zamboanga City Fire District (ZCFD) has recorded 27 grassfires within this month compared to the zero-incident for the same period last year.
Senior Insp. Douglas Zabala, ZCFD operations chief, said on Thursday the local fire department has already embarked on an information drive to prevent occurrence of more grassfires in this city.
Zabala said the dry weather condition is the main contributory factor to the spike of grassfire incidents, which occurred in at least 12 barangays.
He said the residents should be careful in burning garbage and in making bonfire during camping, while smokers are also advised to refrain from throwing cigarette butts on dry grasses.
Meanwhile, Zabala lauded the plan of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office to acquire more firefighting equipment worth PHP600,000 specifically designed to combat forest fires.
