MANILA — The Commission on Appointments (CA) on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Gen. Benjamin Madrigal Jr. as Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff.

Zamboanga Rep. Seth Jalosjos, chairman of the CA committee on national defense, recommended the approval of Madrigal’s appointment at the plenary. There was no opposition to his appointment.

Madrigal was installed as AFP chief in December last year, replacing now Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr.

Madrigal, the 51st AFP chief-of-staff, served notably as 4th Infantry Division commander, Southern Luzon Command and Eastern Mindanao Command chief.

A member of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1985, Madrigal was the most senior among the Board of Generals’ recommendees and also among the most competent in terms of distinct professionalism, leadership and character.

Madrigal held key positions in the Philippine Army (PA), which includes command of the 4th Infantry Division based in Cagayan De Oro.

He also served as assistant division commander and later acting head of the 10th Infantry Division in Compostela Valley before becoming Army chief.

Madrigal is set to retire on September 28, 2019.
