LAOAG CITY — Fishermen in the province who wish to venture in aquaculture may wish to register and avail of the tilapia fingerlings distribution next month.

Roy Gonzales, provincial fishery officer of Ilocos Norte, said the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) is now preparing for the dispatch of thousands of tilapia fingerlings to boost fish production in the province.

“The tilapia fingerlings distribution is apart from the provision of more fishing paraphernalia being given to our fishermen associations,” Gonzales said Friday, as he urged interested groups or individuals to have their names listed prior to the distribution.

Over the years, the tilapia fingerlings distribution in the province has provided additional source of livelihood to some 74,000 registered fisherfolk who are often hit by calamities all year round.

BFAR hopes that by giving them initial capital, the beneficiaries will be able to sustain their livelihood and improve their quality of life in the long run.

In support of this program, the Ilocos Norte government is also eyeing the establishment of a fish laboratory and upgrading of its fish farm facilities to enhance the implementation of livelihood programs to the marginalized sectors.

“We are thankful for the government’s endless support to us. May God continue to bless you in abundance,” said Domingo La Torre, president of the Pasuquin Tuna Fishermen Cooperative, who was among the latest recipients of payaos courtesy of BFAR.
