A total of 75 drivers tested negative for illegal drugs in a surprise drug test conducted by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) 6 (Western Visayas) here Friday.

The “Oplan Harabas, Drug Test Muna Bago Pasada” was held simultaneously for drivers of public utility vehicles (PUV) in various terminals nationwide.

In Bacolod, the drug tests were conducted in three areas – the Ceres Liner Northbound Terminal in Barangay Bata and Southbound Terminal in Barangay 31, and the DAALCO Waiting Station in Libertad South Public Market, Barangay 40.

Those underwent the drug test were 24 jeepney drivers, 20 taxi drivers, and 19 tricycle drivers, and 12 utility van drivers.

The PDEA-6, headed by officer-in-charge Alex Tablate, said in a statement that “Oplan Harabas” was organized to undertake measures to prevent drivers under the influence of illegal drugs from causing road traffic accidents and to ensure the safety of the riding public.

The initiative was led by PDEA-6 in coordination with the Philippine National Police, Land Transportation Office, and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.

PDEA Director General Aaron Aquino said the drug test was conducted as part of the holistic approach to monitor drivers under the influence of illegal drugs.

“The driver who refuses to undergo the mandatory drug test will be reported and immediately endorsed to the LTO.

The safety of the riding public is our primary concern and this program will serve as our revalidation effort on the alleged illegal drug use by drivers of public transportation. At the same time, promote a drug-free public transport system all over the country,” Aquino added.
