‘Normal power condition’ for Luzon grid on Sunday

By Joann Villanueva/Philippine News Agency

MANILA – The pubic need not worry about any power outages on Sunday after the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) announced that the Luzon grid is in “normal power condition,” despite having been under yellow and red alerts in the past days due to thin electricity supply.

The Department of Energy (DOE) admitted that five power plants are still down while one is currently de-rated, the Unit 2 of SEM-Calaca Power Corporation (SCPC), which is currently producing only 200 megawatts (MW) instead of its normal capacity of 300MW.

Those that are currently non-operational are:

— Panasia Energy Inc. (PEI) Limay A1, which tripped due to actuation of turbine overspeed relay on April 13
— SMC Consolidated Power Corporation (SMCCPC) Limay Unit 2, which suffered from boiler tube leak on April 11
— Team Energy Corporation Sual Unit 1, which experienced boiler circulating pump piping leak last April 9
— Southwest Luzon Power Generation Corporation (SLPGC) Unit 2, which was hit by vibration in primary air fan last April 7
— Pagbilao Energy Corporation Unit 3 that registered boiler sagging last April 2

DOE, on the other hand, said Unit 1 of South Luzon Thermal Energy Corp. (SLTEC) Unit 1 is now running on full load after “it was synchronized to the grid at 2:03 a.m. yesterday and achieved full load at 8:50 a.m.”

“The DOE will continue to update the public on further developments,” it added.
