DND mourns passing of ex-Ambassador Severino

MANILA — The Department of National Defense (DND) joins the nation in mourning the passing of former Ambassador Rodolfo Severino Jr. on Good Friday.

He was eight days away from his 83rd birthday at the time of his death, having been born on April 27, 1936

“The Department of National Defense joins the nation in mourning the passing of former Ambassador, ASEAN Secretary-General, and Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Rodolfo Severino, Jr.,” the DND said in a statement over the weekend.

Severino previously held the following positions:

Third, Second, and First Secretary, Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. (1967–1974);

Special Assistant to the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Affairs (1974–1976);

Minister-Counsellor and Chargé d’Affaires, Philippine Embassy in Beijing (1976–1978);

Philippine Consul General, Houston, Texas (1979–1986);

Assistant Secretary for Asian and Pacific Affairs and ASEAN Senior Official of the Philippines (1986–1988);

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Malaysia (1989–1992);

Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs and ASEAN Senior Official of the Philippines (1992–1997);

Professor, Asian Institute of Management, Manila, the Philippines (2003–2004);

Visiting Research Fellow, ISEAS, Singapore, Singapore (2005–2008).

He also served as ASEAN Secretary General from 1998 to 2002.

“The Philippine defense establishment takes cognizance of and will always be grateful for his contributions and accomplishments in the promotion of the diplomatic interests of our country in the international community,” the DND statement added.
