DepEd lauded for insuring teachers on poll duty

MANILA – Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Tuesday lauded the Department of Education (DepEd) for providing a life and accident insurance to teachers who will serve in the May 13 elections.

“It is commendable that the Department of Education has assured that the 257,000 teachers who will be serving as board of election inspectors (BEIs) in the 2019 mid-term election will be covered by a life and accident insurance,” said Gatchalian in a statement.

Gatchalian said that while he appreciates the DepEd’s preparation for the elections, the insurance must also be complemented by providing tighter security for teachers as they put “their lives on the line for our democracy” during the polls.

“Malaki ang ambag at sakripisyo ng ating mga guro tuwing eleksyon. Nararapat lamang natin na bigyan natin sila ng karampatang proteksyon laban sa sakuna at anumang banta sa kanilang buhay (Our teachers contribute and sacrifice a lot every election. It is only right for us to provide them with adequate protection against any untoward incident or threat to their lives),” Gatchalian said.

According to the DepEd, teachers will receive a reimbursement of up to PHP50,000 in case of injuries, and PHP200,000 up to PHP500,000 in case of death.
