MANILA — The Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday night expressed grief and condolences to the families of the shooting victims at the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH).

In a statement, the DOH confirmed that no other patients and NCMH staff were hurt nor involved in the incident.

“The hospital is in full operation and functioning normally,” the statement read.

The DOH did not name the persons involved and requested for the privacy of the family due to the sensitivities of the issue involving the patient.

According to police reports, the incident happened in one of the wards of the NCMH around 2:30 p.m.

A 27-year-old psychiatric patient was allegedly shot by his grandfather after giving a different answer to his question.

The grandfather also fired at the victim’s grandmother who has gone mad about her grandchild’s death. She had two gunshots and was sent to the hospital immediately.

The grandfather killed himself after the incident.

“The Philippine National Police (PNP) is conducting an investigation on the matter in coordination with NCMH. The NCMH is committed to ensuring the safety of its patients and staff and is taking measures to tighten security at the hospital,” the statement read.
