300 volunteers joins International Clean–Up

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, Sept 20 (PIA) — Some 300 volunteers from various government agencies, civil society organizations and the private sector in Eastern Visayas joined the clean up activity in different areas last September 16 in observance of this year’s International Coastal Clean-Up Day.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and its field offices, together with the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), spearheaded the activity to ensure a safe and sound environment beneficial to the health and well-being of the community.

DENR assistant regional director for Management Services Arturo N. Salazar enjoined the active participation of the public in cleaning-up the waterways.

“Let us join millions of people around the globe in rehabilitating and cleaning our coastal areas, seas, rivers and waterways from marine debris that harm our marine life and ecosystems this international coastal cleanup (ICC) day,” Salazar said.

According to Maita Reina G. Sucgang, DENR’s public affairs office chief, recycled wastes collected from the clean-up will be sold to junk shops and the proceeds will be donated to Tahanang Walang Hagdan, a non-government organization.

In Tacloban, the clean-up activity was conducted along the coast of Panalaron bay, Cancabato bay, San Pedro bay and Mangonbangon river. | PIA
