No flights affected in Monday’s NAIA lightning alert

MANILA — The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) was put under lightning alert for almost 30 minutes on Monday afternoon.

At 12:27 p.m., the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) issued a red lightning alert, which was lowered to yellow alert at 12:42 p.m. The lightning alert was lifted 12:54 p.m.

A red lightning alert is a safety measure to prevent any untoward incident from happening when lightning is prevalent in the immediate area and may endanger passengers, personnel, and flight operations.

During a red lightning alert, the ramp movement for both aircraft and ramp personnel is temporarily suspended.

MIAA general manager Ed Monreal earlier said the red lightning alert is being announced to protect not just the passengers, but also the airport personnel, especially those working at the ramp.

The last time MIAA issued a red lightning alert was Sunday. In both days, the MIAA said there were no delayed flights due to the alert.
