LAOAG CITY — The Philippine Science High School (PSHS) in Ilocos Sur is encouraging all highly competitive students entering Grade 7 to pursue Science and Technology courses and enjoy the perks of being a government scholar.

In a press conference held in Laoag City Monday, Dr. Ronnalee Orteza, campus director of PSHS, said they are eying for 1,800 applicants for the national competitive examination set on Oct. 19, 2019.

Last year, there were 2,065 applicants but only the top 90 passers were successfully admitted.

For interested applicants, Orteza said the deadline for filing of application forms will be on Sept. 13, 2019.

“In preparation for the exam, we conduct review sessions every Friday at the Shamrock Elementary School in Laoag,” Orteza said.

Only one test will be administered, a scholastic aptitude test (known as National Competitive Examination), which is designed to measure the student’s scientific ability, quantitative ability, abstract reasoning, and verbal aptitude.

Records in the previous year shows most of the takers are from Ilocos Norte and they have the highest passing rate compared to other provinces.

Last June, she reported government scholar Reina Nette Daguio from Laoag City emerged as the first summa cum laude of PSHS when she graduated at the University of the Philippines with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.

To encourage more takers, the PSHS has intensified their coordination with the different schools in the province and their local chief executives.
