MANILA — Boxing icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s victory over American Keith Thurman in their match at the MGM Grand Arena, Las Vegas on Sunday (Philippine time) highlights the Filipino boxer’s immense legacy and dedication to the sport.

“The Armed Forces of the Philippines congratulates Senator Manny Pacquiao in his victory against Keith Thurman. This latest win truly manifests his legacy and shows us Filipinos the value of enduring excellence,” Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) public affairs office chief, Col. Noel Detoyato, said in a message to reporters.

Pacquiao prevailed over Thurman with a split decision and won his 13th world title overall.

In Sunday’s bout, Pacquiao scored his 61st win against seven defeats and two draws. Thurman, meanwhile, suffered his first career loss after a 29-0 start with 22 knockouts.

Detoyato said Pacquiao’s dedication to his craft, hard work, and sacrifice continue to be an inspiration to the Filipinos, especially in the military organization.

“His strength that comes from his humility and compassion have always won our hearts and minds in his decades of fighting in the boxing arena. We join the whole Filipino nation in the outpour of support to our world champion and brother in the reserve force,” Detoyato added.

In December 2017, Pacquiao was promoted to the rank of a full-fledged colonel after finishing his General Staff Course.

Prior to this, his promotion to lieutenant colonel was approved in September 2011 as recommended by Army Officials.

He first enlisted in the Army Reserve Force with the rank of sergeant in 2006 with the recommendation of then AFP chief-of-staff, General Alexander Yano.

Pacquiao was then promoted to technical sergeant in the same year, rising through the ranks when he became a master sergeant in 2009.
