DA’s stand on proposed sugar import liberalization questioned

Members of the Senate have delved into the stand of the Department of Agriculture (DA)after the Department of Finance declared its intent to liberalize sugar importation in the country to lower the price of the commodity. Sen. Miguel Zubiri argues that the move would adversely impact millions of Filipino sugar farmers amd workers. Sen. Cynthia Villar, for her part, points out that only traders will benefit from the liberalization at the expense of the local growers. Agriculture Sec. William Dar has assured that the agency is still asking management for a pros and cons position paper for deliberation.
