Weather may improve in northern Luzon Thursday night: PAGASA

MANILA — Improving weather is possible beginning Thursday night in northern Luzon where a low-pressure area (LPA) is expected to bring heavy rains.

The improvement may occur as the LPA over Northern Luzon’s Mountain Province on Thursday may further move westwards and already exit landmass heading towards West Philippine Sea, said weather forecaster Chris Perez from Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

“That development will pave the way for improving weather in Northern Luzon from Thursday night onwards,” he said.

He cited low chance for the LPA to dissipate while over land. In its 24-hour forecast, PAGASA located the LPA in the vicinity of Mountain Province’s Natonin municipality as of 3 a.m. Thursday.

PAGASA forecast scattered lightning, strong winds and light to moderate rains with occasional downpour, which may cause flooding, in northern Luzon’s Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley Region as well as Aurora province in Central Luzon Region.

The LPA may bring these areas cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms, PAGASA said.

Citing latest PAGASA simulations, Perez said there’s low chance for the LPA to develop into a tropical cyclone even when this weather system is already over West Philippine Sea.

The LPA may dissipate while either inside or outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, he added. (PNA)
