Iloilo police calls to jam signals inside jail

ILOILO CITY — The Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) has requested from the provincial government a signal jammer device to be installed at the Iloilo Provincial District Jail in Nanga, Pototan.

The provincial government is currently assessing whether or not it could fund the purchase of the device requested during Wednesday’s meeting of the Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC).

IPPO director Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba, in a previous interview, said they suspect ongoing transactions and operations of high profile inmates involved in the illegal drug trade in the province.

He particularly mentioned high-value inmates Jesus Espinosa and Rolando Torpio, currently inside the facility.

Tayaba also said there are even some inmates recently apprehended doing operations using communication devices.

“If the signal will be lost, even if they have communication equipment, they cannot communicate,” he said.

The IPPO previously requested from the provincial government communications equipment like radios, radio transmitter and repeaters.

A fund of PHP2.9 million contained in the supplemental budget has been approved by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan. (Cindy Ferrer/PNA)
