NDRRMC reminds public to ‘duck, cover, and hold’ during earthquakes

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has reiterated its reminders in preparing for earthquakes.

The Council has prompted the public to duck, cover, and hold if stuck inside a building, or run to open spaces when outside. Once the shaking stops, one’s head should be protected while finding a way out of the building. It is also important not to panic when an earthquake occurs.

The NDRRMC has corrected the wrong notion of climbing to the highest floor, believing that it is the last to collapse. According to a study, buildings fall horizontally. It is better to go near the structure’s post as it is the safest place.

A geologist has explained that if the movement can be felt going up and down, the place is near the epicenter. If it is sideways, the area is far from it.

The NDRRMC has encouraged the public to join the simultaneous earthquake drill next Thursday.
