MDSW helps street dwellers amid COVID-19 pandemic

The Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW) continues helping street dwellers in the city as part of the enhanced community quarantine.

According to Chief of MDSW Re Fugoso, the rescued street dwellers will be asked to return home, and homeless people will be brought to the Delpan Sports Complex where they will be provided basic necessities.

The MDSW Chief adds that they also cater to homeless people from other places. The rescue operation poses as a challenge since not all street dwellers cooperate.

Meanwhile, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has assured that it has a program for informal workers.

According to DOLE OIC Assistant Secretary Dominic Tutay, an emergency employment will be implemented for the affected informal workers.

The said workers will be enlisted in the “Barangay Ko, Bahay Ko” program where they will sanitize a community and will be paid in a span of 10 days.

DOLE’s data show that 40 percent of the 5.5 million workers in NCR are considered as informal workers. – Report from Kenneth Paciente
