LEGAZPI CITY — The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) assured passengers that night flights to the Legazpi domestic airport would be restored by Sunday, October 22.
This, after technicians finished installing ground wires and calibrating spare parts that would operate the Runway Threshold Indicator Lights (RTIL), said Erick Apolonio, CAAP spokesperson.
Apolonio, in a phone interview on Wednesday, confirmed reports that the lightning bolt that hit the RTIL indeed damaged the runway lights of the airport, forcing CAAP to suspend night flights since Saturday.
Apolonio said, “the damage was a minor one where the ground wires and some parts there were destroyed by the lightning bolt.”
He said a team of technicians from the CAAP central office would take three days to complete the repair works by installing new wires and calibrating new gadgets to make the runway lights operational by this coming Sunday, October 22.
As a precautionary measure, the CAAP issued an advisory to airlines operating in Legazpi airport to limit their flights to daytime in the absence of working runway lights, Apolonio said. (PNA)
