Meralco to shoulder PhP 47 convenience fee on online payment

Manila Electric Company (Meralco) President and CEO Ray Espinosa has apologized to the Department of Energy (DOE) and consumers for charging a convenience fee for online payment.

Meralco will now shoulder the PhP 47 convenience fee for their mobile application that has caused an uproar among consumers after the DOE questioned the imposing of said fee during the quarantine period.

In its letter to the DOE, the company explained that the online payment gateway asks for the convenience fee and it does not go to Meralco.

Meralco admitted that it should have been shouldering the convenience fee since the declaration of the Enhanced Community Quarantine. The company will pay or refund the PhP 47 convenience fee charged to consumers from March 16 to May 15. – Report from Naomi Tiburcio
