FDA warns against buying unregistered food products, supplements

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has again warned against the purchase of unregistered food products and supplements.

In the recent list issued by the agency, one of the products is the well-known brand of liver spread, Reno. The said product is unregistered resulting to the prohibition of its sale and distribution until the FDA issues a certificate.

The FDA has clarified that Reno Foods, the manufacturer of Reno Liver Spread, has a license to operate only as a food repacker and processed meat product manufacturer.

“RENO Foods, Incorporated, the manufacturer of RENO brand Liver spread has an existing LTO as food repacker. In 2017, the company applied for the variation of their LTO to include their product line as manufacturer of processed meat products. Upon inspection of the FDA, the company was granted approval of the LTO as manufacturer.”

However, upon verification, the FDA recently discovered that the food product has currently no Certificate of Product Registration.

“This year, FDA inspectors collected samples of the RENO Brand Liver Spread for verification of their CPR. Upon extensive search of FDA databases, the mentioned liver spread failed to secure a CPR. Thus, the FDA has a responsibility to inform the public, through an advisory, that RENO Brand Liver Spread is NOT REGISTERED as of this date as a processed food product and must secure the required authorization from this Office.”

The list of unregistered products also include a whitening capsule, Spanish style bangus and a paste sauce.

According to the FDA, if the said products did not go through the evaluation process, the quality and safety in consuming the products are uncertain. The prohibition can be retracted once the manufacturer has explained its side.

The FDA strongly believes that its verification is conducted fairly although products listed as high risk are prioritized.

The public is advised to review the FDA website for the status of registration of a product before use. – Report from Mark Fetalco
