The City of Marikina has been placed under a state of calamity on Friday following the massive flooding ang damage caused by Typhoon Ulysses.
Marikina Mayor Marcy Teodoro said he will go to the council to realign their proposed 2021 budget and prioritize its rehabilitation program, including the mental health of affected residents.
“Bumabangon pa lang kami roon sa pinsalang inabot namin sa bagyong Ondoy. Naulit ngayon… In the case of Marikina, maaaring lingo, kaya namin i-restore physically (We are still recovering from the damage of Typhoon Ondoy. It happened again… In the case of Marikina, it may take weeks to restore it physically),” Teodoro explained.
“Economic I think would take five or ten years to recover,” Teodoro estimated.
Authorities reported that three individuals were killed in Marikina as of Friday noon due to the impact of typhoon Ulysses, including a 33-year-old male from Barangay Malanday, and a 34-year-old male and an 82-year-old woman from Provident Village.
The body of the victim in Malanday who slipped on the stairs while being evacuated was retrieved on Thursday, while the younger fatality in Provident Village who was trapped by fallen debris was recovered on Friday. Authorities are still searching for the body of the senior citizen as of Friday noon.
Many areas were left covered in mud due to the flooding and are still experiencing power outage. Residents are now requesting for clean water and food.
The Marikina PIO announced on its Facebook Page that online classes and distance learning are suspended until Tuesday next week in the city for “levels both in private and public schools due to the damage brought by Typhoon Ulysses.” – Report from Louisa Erispe
