Chief Presidential Legal Counsel On the New Year

Like an unexpected and dreadful lightning, COVID-19 struck the world at the beginning of this year (2020), and the entire humanity fell to its knees and the economies of the world were torn apart.

Each country struggled and wrestled to survive the onslaught of the pandemic, as millions perish while more were infected and hovering between life and death. Owing to the indomitable spirit and the will to live even under deathly adversities, we Filipinos, even in the midst of this ghostly and unwanted holocaust not only have survived — we have likewise overcome the risk of death arising from the lethal unseen enemy, as well as reduce the spread of its deathly transmission, owing to the stringent health measures and protocols imposed by the government.

The challenges brought by the pandemic have been frighteningly novel, but the government’s efforts and science based strategies stave off the destructive and adverse effects of COVID-19. Comparatively with other countries having huge population, we are much better off as we manage to contain its spread among our people.

As we grope through the darkness thrown to us by the virus, we are guided by a flickering but steady light provided by our policymakers, health experts, scientists, consultants and frontliners from various sectors, including all Filipinos who disciplined themselves in strictly and diligently observing minimum health standards, and sacrificing their freedom of movement as well, we wish everyone a Happy New Year!

The new year augurs a new hope, a new beginning for the resurrection of a robust economy and the return to productive and safe normal lives. With unity among all of us and with God’s grace, we shall triumph over our adversities.
