Cebu City leads highest daily COVID-19 case tally

Six months after being declared as an epicenter of COVID-19 in the country, Cebu City has topped again on Tuesday the list of localities with the highest number of daily reported cases.

On January 26, the city had 84 new cases, followed by Davao City with 67, Cavite with 51, Quezon City with 47, and Rizal with 41.

Data from the Department of Health (DOH) show that the city currently has 986 active cases from its 12,019 total number of cases, 10,332 recoveries, and 701 deaths.

The local government assured that the healthcare system in the city is still in good position despite the surge in cases. It also expressed optimism that there will be more recoveries in the coming days.

“I’m pretty sure na maibaba agad natin ‘yan in the next few days lalo na mas pinaghihigpitan pa natin ito ngayon (I’m pretty sure that we can lower the number of cases in the next few days, especially with the tightening of protocols),” Joel Garganera of the Cebu City Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) stated.

In line with this, officials are now preparing for its vaccination program by inspecting storage facilities in Mandaue City that can hold vaccines requiring below zero degrees temperature. Students with medical courses are being eyed to assist in the vaccination program. – Report from John Aroa/PTV Cebu
