Navotas residents rushed to hospital due to ammonia leak

Around 83 individuals were rushed to nearby hospitals after getting exposed to ammonia that leaked from the explosion of a surge tank of an ice plant in Navotas City.

50 persons were rushed to the Navotas City Hospital without requiring oxygen support and were sent home after being observed for six hours.

33 people who were rushed to the Tondo Medical Center were discharged after reportedly being in stable condition. They were advised to observe symptoms and delayed reaction to ammonia and may return to the hospital anytime.

Dr. Maricel Castillo, Senior House Officer of the Navotas City Hospital, warned that unattended symptoms from exposure may cause complications such as blindness, drying of throat, and eventual difficulty in breathing.

In a text message, Navotas City Mayor Toby Tiangco said the owner of the cold storage will shoulder expenses of the victims of the chemical leak.

The ammonia leak was declared contained past 10 o’clock on Wednesday evening. But some residents near the ice plant are still staying outdoors, saying that they are still smelling ammonia after they were sent home. – Report from Bernard Jaudian
