Gov’t optimistic to reach herd immunity by 2023

The Philippine government is optimistic the country will attain herd immunity against Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in 2023.

This was confirmed by Department of Health (DOH) Undersecretary Maria Rosario Veregeire in spite of criticisms against the slow roll-out of government’s national vaccination program. She added the Philippines may reach herd immunity even before 2023 once the vaccination of the target population is accomplished sooner.

Herd immunity is a concept where the virus cannot further spread because an adequate number of the population has been vaccinated. Vaccine Czar Carlito Galvez Jr. initially stated that government aims to vaccinate 70% of the country’s population to create a herd immunity against COVID-19. – PTV News
