More forces deployed in West Philippine Sea

The Philippine Navy has deployed more forces to the West Philippine Sea following the directive of Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief LtGen. Cirilito Sobejana and the passage of the new coast guard law of China.

The new law of China authorizes its coast guard to fire at foreign vessels it considers a threat to the territories it is claiming.

Navy Flag Officer-in-command Vice Admiral Giovanni Bacordo reported their vessel just finished a mission near Pag-asa Island and some ships are being prepared for sovereignty patrol in contested areas.

“Aside from adding, increasing the number of vessels, we are also looking at increasing the operational tempo,” Bacordo disclosed.

The Navy will be evaluating the suggestion of some experts to place Philippine vessels near Chinese vessels to further protect fisher folks.

“I will review our deployment of the vessels if that’s the case, but what we are doing now is more of sovereignty patrols and show the Flag missions,” Bacordo added.

Also, the quarantine period of BRP Antonio Luna is set to be completed on February 25. Its arrival ceremony is expected on February 26.

Meanwhile, LtGen. Jose Faustino has officially assumed post as new commanding general of the Philippine Army.
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana led the change of command ceremony at the army’s headquarters in Taguig City.

“Your leadership is crucial in ensuring that the organization is responsive not only to the multifaceted challenges it is currently facing, but also proactive to address emerging threats as well,” Lorenzana said. – Report from Bea Bernardo
