Marikina River dredging begins

Dredging activity in Marikina River has started on Wednesday morning to remove illegally reclaimed areas surrounding the river.

This will begin at the Olandes Sewage Treatment Plant and will be led by Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Roy Cimatu and other officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

The move began following series of reports to the DENR concerning settlements in some portions of the river after the massive flooding brought about by Typhoon Ulysses.

Unauthorized establishment of structures that result in waterflow obstructions is prohibited under Presidential Decree No. 1067, otherwise known as the Water Code of the Philippines.
