Mayor Joy Belmonte reported on Wednesday the detection of 18 cases of new variants of COVID-19 in Quezon City.

Out of the 18 cases, 13 are of United Kingdom (UK) variant, 4 are carrying the South African variant, and one is currently being verified.

“Ang tingin ko talaga malaki ang kinalaman ng presensya ng variants na ito sa biglang pagkalat ng sakit na ito (I think the presence of these variants play a role in the sudden transmission of this disease),” Belmonte observed.

At least 14 areas in the city have been placed under special concern lockdown due to increase in COVID-19 cases, including barangay halls due to transmission among office staff. These include:

• Portion of Durian St., Brgy. Pasong Tamo

• L. Pascual St., Brgy. Baesa

• De Los Santos Compound, Heavenly Drive, Brgy. San Agustin

• No. 46 and 50, K-9th St., Brgy. West Kamias

• 49 and 51 E. Rod. Sr. Ave., Brgy. Doῆa Josefa

• Paul and Thaddeus Sts., Doῆa Carmen, Brgy. Commonwealth

• No. 64 14th Ave., Brgy. Socorro

• No. 64-B, Agno Extension, Brgy. Tatalon

• No. 237 Apo St., Brgy. Maharlika

• No. 90 Gonzales Compound, Brgy. Balon Bato

Meanwhile, Mayor Belmonte denied there is corruption in the fines and penalties imposed on violators of health protocols since barangays are issuing receipts. – Report from Allan Francisco
