LTFRB to open 195 additional routes for provincial buses

By NG Seruela

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) will open 195 additional routes for 2,665 provincial buses on April 15.

According to the LTFRB, the additional routes are seen as a “solution” by Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade to reduce the operation of colorum (unfranchised) vehicles that can cause the further transmission of COVID-19.

The department said the operations of provincial buses will still be subject to the restrictions and requirements of local government units (LGUs).

Roadworthy provincial PUBs must also acquire a QR code from the LTFRB and must have a valid personal passenger insurance policy to be allowed to operate.

The agency emphasized that there should be no increase in bus fare, and that the minimum health standards must always be followed to prevent the spread of COVID-19. “7 Commandments”

The agency reiterated their strict implementation of the “7 Commandments” health standards in all forms of public transportation, in accordance with the recommendations of health experts:

1) Always wear a face mask and face shield;

2) Do not talk on the phone;

3) Do not eat while riding public transportation;

4) Always maintain proper and sufficient ventilation in public utility vehicles (PUVs);

5) Always conduct disinfection of vehicles;

6) Passengers with COVID-19 symptoms are not allowed to ride public transportation;

7) Always maintain physical distancing (“one-seat apart” rule).
