Filipina weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz has formally made it to the Olympics after her performance at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
The 2016 Olympic silver medalist completed the required six Olympic qualifiers to make it to the quadrennial meet this year. This will serve as her fourth consecutive Olympic appearance.
Diaz clinched the fourth place in the 55-kilogram category after registering 94 kilograms in the Snatch and 118 kgs. in the Clean and Jerk for a 212-kilogram total lift.
Liao Quiyun of China dominated the occasion after garnering a 222 kilograms overall record. Another Chinese lifter, Li Yajun, came in second with 221 kilograms, while Uzbekistan representative Nabieva Muattar placed third after lifting 213 kilograms.
Diaz is the seventh Filipino to join this year’s Olympics. The others are EJ Obiena for pole vaulting, Carlos Yulo for gymnastics, and Eumir Felix Marcial, Irish Magno, Nesthy Petecio, and Carl Paalam for boxing. -Report by PTV Sports/ JBB-jlo
