NCAA season 96 opens in June

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Board has moved the opening of the NCAA Season ’96 from May to June.

The league’s opening will adopt a hybrid setup to avoid any convergence.

In an interview with PTV Sports, NCAA Chairperson Father Vic Calvo explained how the games will be played this season, particularly team sports.

“It [will] be in mid-June. Team games…depende, pero naka-ready ‘yung [it depends, but all ready are the] skills challenge for basketball, slam dunk contest, at ‘yung [and the] three-point shootout. ‘Yung [The] taekwondo, poomsae will be online, while chess will have online competition,” Calvo said.

He also suggested a fresh approach to the new normal despite having to deal with the pandemic.

“We explored all the options. [What] I mean is, we have to be creative for not giving up this season. Mas madali pag sinabi nating wala nang season [It is easier to say there will be no season]. Everybody would stay at home, but we should have to show the resiliency of the Filipino athletes in spite of the pandemic. You see, we have the new normal. We should do a new setup, kasi ‘yong dating abnormal, normal na ngayon (because what used to be abnormal is now normal),” Calvo said.

The NCAA Board is now looking into more sports that can be added to the league’s lineup.
