DOH warns vs. taking aspirin as treatment for COVID-19

By NG Seruela

The Department of Health (DOH) warned the public on Sunday (May 2) against a post circulating online that urges people to take aspirin as medicine against COVID-19.

The misleading post insists that COVID-19 “does not exist as a virus, but rather a bacterium.”

“COVID-19 disease has been found to cause blood clotting in humans and causes blood clotting in the veins, which causes blood clotting in which makes it difficult for a person to breathe because the brain, heart and lungs cannot receive oxygen, causing people to die quickly,” it read.

The DOH disproved the item and clarified that it does not recommend taking aspirin as medicine against COVID-19 since its wrong or inappropriate use can lead to serious conditions such as internal bleeding or death.

They also said COVID-19 is caused by a virus, not a bacteria.

“Ang aspirin ay binibigay lang sa mga pasyenteng kailangang mai-admit sa ospital na may malalang COVID-19,” the Health department said.

The DOH urged the public to be vigilant, and to “always [check] information available online with legitimate sources.” – jlo
