COMELEC eyes categorization of COC filing

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is looking into “categorizing” the filing of candidacy for the 2022 elections.

In a Laging Handa public briefing on Friday (May 28), COMELEC Commissioner Antonio Kho Jr. said that the poll body is currently reviewing the “categorizing” of candidacy in October due to the country’s situation amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Iyong ating filing of certificate of candidacy that would happen on first week of October. So, alam na po ng mga prospective candidate that they be ready come October. In response doon sa COVID situation, pinag-uusapan pa ito, although wala pa itong final approval by the en banc, pinag-uusapan na i-categorized na lang iyong mga candidates probably by position and assign a particular date or dates for them. Let us say lahat ng mga senador, puwedeng i-assign sa kanila two days, mga presidential and vice presidential position, another day, for local officials, another day.”

Comm. Kho said that through different dates for filing of the certificate of candidacy, overcrowding will be avoided.

Meanwhile, the COMELEC shared that there are currently 59 million registered voters nationwide. Kho encouraged the public to register and vote in the next elections.
