DOH: Average daily cases higher than early May

The average number of daily COVID-19 cases recorded from May 27 to June 2 has again reached over 6,000, higher than the recorded figures in the previous weeks.

The Department of Health (DOH) said the case increase is currently faster in Mindanao than in the National Capital Region (NCR), noting that all Mindanao regions are experiencing a spike.

“Kaya natin siya binabantayan kasi ‘yung bilis – ‘yung steepness ng line graph – medyo steep siya. And habang pabilis nang pabilis ‘yung pagdami ng kaso, there’s a risk from a very small number of cases, magiging napakarami,” DOH Epidemiology Bureau OIC-Director Alethea de Guzman said.

Data show that there is also an upward trend in the Visayas, with Region 6 having the fastest case rise, while Region 2 and other portions of Region 3 are the fastest in Luzon. An increase was also observed in NCR, while Cavite and Laguna have the greatest number of cases.

OCTA Research tagged as “areas of serious concern” Tuguegarao City with a 197% case growth rate between May 27 to June 2, Davao City with 87%, Iloilo City with 84%, Cagayan de Oro with 51%, and Tarlac City with 51%.

The DOH attributed the ongoing case increase to a drop in public compliance with minimum public health standards and the emergence of new variants.

Healthcare utilization rate is highest in Iloilo City at 88%, Tuguegarao at 87%, Butuan at 74%, Cagayan de Oro at 74%, Tarlac City at 73%, and Zamboanga City at 71%.

Bacoor has the highest intensive care unit (ICU) utilization rate at 100%, followed by Tuguegarao at 98%, Iloilo City at 95%, Zamboanga City and Tarlac City at 90%, and Cotabato City at 86%. – Report from Mark Fetalco/AG-jlo
