Kiefer Ravena signs up with Japanese B.League

The Japanese B.League team Shiga Lakestars shocked everyone when it announced yesterday (June 2) that 27-year-old Filipino guard Kiefer Ravena is now part of their squad.

This was followed by Ravena’s personal post where he thanked the Lakestars for their trust in him. He also expressed his gratitude towards his fellow NLex Road Warriors, the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas, and the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

Aside from this, the 6-foot guard sought support as he enters a new chapter in his professional career.

But just like his brother Thirdy, Kiefer’s entry into the B.League became controversial since he just signed a three-year contract extension with the NLex Road Warriors last September 2020.

In an interview with PTV Sports, PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial said Ravena’s sudden jump-ship to the Japanese league is not allowed.

“Hindi puwede kasi may uniformed player contract (UPC) siya sa PBA, so may kontrata. Sundin niya ‘yong kontrata ng PBA,” Marcial explained.

This was seconded by the Road Warriors in the statement it issued which indicated that while they want to support Ravena, there is still the need for him to honor the contract with the team and the PBA.

The N-Lex Road Warriors also vowed to abide by the decision of the PBA Board or its commissioner.  – Report by Ma. Isabel Reyes/ JBB – jlo
