As the Philippines celebrates its 123rd Independence Day amid the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the commemoration activities that mark the country’s liberation from the colonizers are moved online.
Before the pandemic, Independence Day is celebrated through festivities that show the Filipino culture. Many Filipinos worldwide participate in shows, seminars, and even parades to show their support for the Philippines.
However, in accordance with the minimum health protocols, government agencies encouraged the public to celebrate Independence Day at home to prevent the further spread of COVID-19.
PTV’s online writers conducted several online interviews of Filipinos to know their ways in celebrating the said holiday amid the pandemic.
Symbol of Independence Day
The Philippine Independence Day, observed on June 12, commemorates the liberation of the country from the Spanish colonizers.
For the interviewed group, they all agreed that Independence Day symbolizes two words — freedom and liberation.
“Independence day allows us to celebrate the sacrifices of our forefathers to free the land under the Spanish regime. It reminds us of the importance of the country’s freedom and liberty from constant oppression and unjust social systems,” Allan, an educator, said.
Also, Yeye, a writer, added that the holiday symbolizes and recognizes the courage of the Filipinos who fought for the Philippine independence.
Meanwhile, for some, like Marisse, an engineer, Independence Day reminds her of “breaking free” from the obstructions of life.
“Reminds me about breaking free from whatever is hindering you from achieving your goal.”
Independence Day celebration
The group told PTV that they are going to spend Independence Day at home in order to prevent the further spread of COVID-19.
Joanne and Gladys, who are both online sellers, along with Marisse, said that they will be spending the day as an ordinary day.
Although the holiday seems to be an ordinary day for some individuals, Pia, a student, said that she is going to celebrate Independence Day “by using my talent in art to create a tribute for Independence Day and sharing it to others.”
Many Filipinos create images, paintings, cultural shows, and even playlists with their personal touch and meaning to mark this day.
Meanwhile, Allan suggested that the public can “continue the fight for freedom by educating ourselves on the importance of the country’s independence and utilize this knowledge to mitigate current social issues that may be detrimental to our sovereignty.”
As the country marks its 123rd Independence Day, it is also significant to recognize and acknowledge the courage and hope of our frontliners in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.
For this Independence Day, Filipinos must stand their ground and not let the pandemic change the traditions of the country by following the minimum health protocols and getting vaccinated. -rir
