Phivolcs: 86 volcanic quakes at Taal in the last 24 hours

A total of 86 volcanic earthquakes, including 84 volcanic tremor events having durations of one to 34 minutes, were observed at Taal Volcano in the past 24-hour period, the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-Phivolcs) said today (July 18).

Phivolcs also measured an average of 5,466 tonnes of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions per day, as of July 17.

“High levels of SO2 gas emissions and steam-rich plumes that rose 2,100 meters before drifting northeast were generated from the Taal Main Crater,” it said in the bulletin.

Alert Level 3 still prevails over Taal Volcano as of today.

Meanwhile, based on data released by the Department of Agriculture on Saturday (July 17), at least ₱24.49 million worth of crops (almost ₱2.1 million) and fisheries (almost ₱22.4 million) was damaged in the municipalities of Agoncillo and Laurel in Batangas due to the Taal unrest.   – (DOST-Phivolcs) / CF – jlo
