NEDA NorMin logs ‘significantly lower’ poverty incidence

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Region 10 reported a “substantial reduction” of poverty in Northern Mindanao during President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration.

Based on the latest poverty survey in 2018, the poverty incidence among families dropped to 17.2%, which translates to around 193,000 poor families in the region, NEDA 10 Director Mylah Faye Aurora Cariño said in a Cabinet report.

This is significantly lower by 14.8 percentage points from the recorded poverty incidence in 2015 which was at 32%.

According to Cariño, the government has already achieved its 2022 poverty reduction rate goal in 2018.

“Ang substantial reduction in poverty and in fact, secretary, in 2018, ang Region 10 prides itself as having the most substantial reduction in poverty among all the regions,” Cariño added.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), four of the five provinces in the region showed significant decreases in poverty incidences. These provinces were Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental.

Moreso, in the latest data released by the Commission on Population and Development in Region 10 (Popcom 10) in May 2021, it said the government’s intensified family planning (FP) services for women and couples have helped reduce the number of poor families in some Northern Mindanao provinces. – CF – bny
